3. Computer controlled cutting

This week I worked on two machines which are Laser cuter and Vinyl cutter.

Group assignment

Laser Cutter

I wondered how to arrange the papers on my study desk, so I tried to make a paper organizer/ paper holder.

Design stage

I used Fusion 360 software to design a paper holder. The object contains two parts, shelf part and side part.

First, I draw the sketch of the shelf part

Then I use parametric design technique to have easy design and easy to change any dimensions in future. Here are the steps to set a parametric equations in fusion 360 software; [ I used it to set the material thickness dimension ]

Then I extruded the sketch form 2D to 3D by using letter (t) for the thickness of the material.

The same technique used for the side part;

Lastly, Save the designs files as .DXF

Shelf part as stl

Side part as stl

Machine stage

RDWorks software used for the laser machine. - Open the software - Import the .DXF designs files - Place the design in the required place - Change the speed & power values to suit the requirements for cutting the cardboard

The YouTube Link shows the process that I followed on the laser cutter machine

Vinyl cutter

I like the back side of my laptop to be more beautiful, so I made my favorite cartoon character which called Elmo as a sticker to stick it on my laptop.

Design stage

Cricut Design Space software will be used to design the sticker.

Then, stick the color paper sticker on the sticky mat, then place it into the right position, then follow the procedure and after cutting remove the extra parts.
