5. 3D printing and scanning¶
What is 3D printing?¶
3D printing is a process of making three dimensional solid objects from a digital file. It’s created by laying down successive layers of material until the object is created. Each of these layers can be seen as a thinly sliced cross-section of the object.
3D printing is also perfectly suited to the creation of complex, bespoke items, making it ideal for rapid prototyping.
What is 3D scanning?¶
3D scanning is the act of studying an object in the real world and gathering all of the data necessary to digitally reconstruct its shape and look. The object can become a 3D model as a result of this procedure, which can be used as a foundation for the 3D project you’re working on, but it can also be used to reconstruct, analyze, or simulate ideas.

Individual assignment¶
Scanning an object 3d using a Smartphone¶
We started by using a program called Qlone that uses a template sheet so it can help it recognize the direction of the object when scanning it.
First we need to download the app from the app store or google play. - QLONE
After that we follow the instructions by printing the mat.
That was my object
And this is the result of scanning
It looks depressed lol
Scanning an object 3d using Xbox kinect¶
By following these steps we can scan even bigger objects than method 1 like a human head. So I tried to scan mine ;)
Designing and Printing a 3D object¶
First, I wanted to print a design I made recently of a contemporary mosque designed in Sketchup
Then, we uploaded our designs in “Ultimaker Cura” the program that is connected to that printer. And these are the steps in the program:
After that, we used “Ultimaker” printer for printing our designs
Final Result¶
And finallyyy here is the final result!!
