8. Moulding and casting

Week 6 Moulding and Casting This week we learned about moulding and casting various materials. Moulding and casting are manufacturing processes that involve pouring a liquid material into a rigid frame known as a mold or matrix. what is the different between them? The main difference between molding and casting is the material used in the process. Metal is typically used in casting, whereas plastics are used in molding. In both cases, the molten material is poured into a die or mold to form the final shape.

Individual assignment:

We were tasked to model a 2.5 design. So, I decided to create something related to my major. I considered many options, including screws, hammers, wrenches, wires, and so on, but finally decided on a gear. I used Fusion360 to do my design.

Then I saved it as STL file and sent it SPR Player software to print it. Here shows the printer settings: - Model size: - Type of milling - Workpiece material and size: - How long it will take - Start cutting

It take one hour and 80 minutes. Here is the result

Then I used this material to make the silicone molds, which took about 24 hours to dry. For safte try to: Don’t ingest, inject and absorb silicone in your body. For more information click here

Because the ratio is 1:1, I used 20 g for both. then, I poured them together and mix it well

38.6 g wasn’t enough, so I added another 10 g.

This is how it looked after drying.

To make it more realistic, I used gypsum. for safet try to avoid: - Excessive Inhaling . - Ingestion. - Ingestion Eye contact. For more information click here

Gypsum has a 5:4 ratio. So, I used 20 g of gypsum powder and 18 g of water instead of 16 by mistake, and it had no effect on the outcome; it simply took longer to dry.

How do I feel about this week?

Making the gear this week was so much fun, and I enjoyed every second of it. Being in Fablab everyday was a little exhausted, especially because I have a summer course, but overall I enjoyed it.
