Final
Project

What I did

  • Those two weeks

I finalized my final project idea

I made some prototypes for the form of the project

I tested some inputs and outputs

    The idea behind it

Our initiative was essentially inspired by the need to have a private area apart from the bustle of the outside world since, in today's hectic environment, finding some peace can be difficult. I myself find it quite difficult to complete a book since I am often distracted. According to studies, consumers open their phones an average of more than 101 times every day. Due to these factors, we thought that it was necessary to create a product that the user could assemble and set up on a table. Or they might simply lay down, place it on their heads, and shut off from the outside world. it combines both:

    Music + Light

    Colors

    An artist perspective

“Instead of trying to reproduce exactly what I see before me, I make more arbitrary use of color to express myself more forcefully.” — Vincent Van Gogh

Painters have discovered the power of color and studied what it does to the viewer for centuries. During the period of post-impressionism, in which artists focused on evoking emotions, colors were used for their underlying emotional associations.

    Psychology

As such, colors can affect neurological pathways in the brain and create a biochemical response. Every color has a wavelength, and each of these affect both the body and the brain in different ways. Using the proper colors and placement can affect feelings, attention and behavior during learning processes.

To utalize this, we have decided to use RGB LED strip lights that represent each mood and help eaither enhance the mood or fix it.

To start with I installed fastled, then I tried an example of a twinkling randomly code and tried changing the colors and chose one pallette because there were many different of them.

    The colors were as follow:

White is the neutral color. Users are free to choose whether they want to read a book or simply relax and meditate.

is a soothing color that can invite harmony and diffuse anxiety therefore when u feel stress a green light will be on.

    yellow

is softer than red and orange, but still sunny and cheerful, yellow can both improve your mood and boost your Energy

Blue a highly peaceful color that is good for taking naps or sleep

Pink is when you already feel calm but want to keep that mood

Red Red light help improve mental health. And it gives you courage when you feel weak

With each color there is a specific sound that will play to help enhance that mood

    Sound

Research has shown that listening to music can reduce anxiety, blood pressure, and pain as well as improve sleep quality, mood, mental alertness, and memory depending on the type of music

We used a speaker to be located inside where the user can rest his\her head and dive into worlds of calmness

I used feather player code and an SD card to uplosd certain audios. you have to make sure when you use the code that you use the same name for both the track on the SD card and in the code.

    The rest of the electronics

Me and my colleuge Sara Hassan switched parts many times and I was involved in the structure process, design of the structure and the cutting, but my main focus was on the electronics. so I can say we both helped each other very well and lerned together because we were both involved in almost every process

Since we had the speaker, I needed to figure out the LED part. we wanted the light to sparckle and change with every click, therfore we took a code from arduino as an example and tested the led light. the sparkling was good but it had many colors on one strip and that is not what we wanted, we wanted a single color for each click, therfore by changing the code and testing it we understood that the code works with color palatte, meaning that there are diffrent hex colors for each transformation of the color. to solve this, we chose diffrenet brightness for each color so it goes from dark blue for examplem to light blue, and this is one palattee, then, we repeated the palatte and changed the color code to red for example, from dark red to bright red, and so on

in the code we counted the number of led we have and placed it there

This is the test result for how the sparkling works for the color white

Those are the rest of the colors

last thing we had to link the button to the LED to the speaker, so in the code itself we chose that for 1 click, it should play this type of music and this type of light, until the user use the button to click, once it is clicked, it should move on to the next command and so on

This is the test result for them together

To switch it off we had to chose a black color and no sound so that the LED can stop working which means it is off now

    Materials

MDF’s excellent soundproofing capabilities are courtesy of its high density, thickness, and STC rating. With such characteristics, it can effectively contain all sound frequencies, something that many wood products struggle to achieve. Therefore we decided to use it for the structure

    Structure

For making a space that can fit the head, we decided to go with half a geodesic dome because it creates a shelter over your head and it can capture and amplify sound.

We used Fusion360 to produce the triangles and hinges, and we checked the angles and gaps several times to make sure they can fit. a smaller scale for the project was cut to test the sound and we invited some friends to see if they noticed anything different while placing their heads inside the area. The good news is that they said you can tell how the noise is muffled inside and reduced outside.

As for the hinges we used Laser machine because we needed a smaller scale for the gaps, a thing that the CNC can't make with its small bid. therefore, we only used the CNC for the triangles themselves.

Since MDF is a material with clear cut, we didn't need too much sanding

Another material we used is a black foam board. the reason behind it is hat we wanted a light weight material to represent the ceiling that has openings for the light.

This is the speed and power that was good for the cutting process

To attach the ceiling to the roof, we used spacers made of foam boards with 3 gaps to make it possible to pass the LED strips between them.

Last thing we designed a chat sheet to explain to the user how the clicking part works, we used Laser Cutting Machine to do that and we engraved the text.

To test the best speed and power for engraving we did a small test and increased the values, assigned a color for each different values.

    Project demo

As for the demo, the following video showcases the different moods and how each click represents a certain light with a certain music

The user can choose to plug it into a power source. a laprop or a bowerbank
