7. Large format CNC (computer controlled Machining)

What is CNC?

The industrial sector relies heavily on CNC machines, which stand for computer numerical control. A human procedure would not be able to achieve the degree of efficiency, accuracy, and consistency offered by these advanced devices, which are operated by computers.

Group assignment

We learned about the speed of the spindle, precautions to take when operating a CNC, and how the machine performs, by adjusting the spindle’s rotation speed and feed rate, we may reduce the amount of time needed to cut the desired designs. Also we learned about the safety tips for the CNC router room.

Safety

For the safety all should:

  • Put on safety glasses and shoes.

  • Keep 1m away from the machine.

  • Avoid touching the device while it is in use.

  • The machine’s stop buttons can be used in an emergency to prevent it from cutting as shown in the coming picture.

  • The CNC machine can only be turned on by a specific key as a safety precaution as shown in the pic.

Here we drill the sheet on the sacrifice sheet to make it stabilized.

After cutting with different speed and feed rate, we noticed that the best ones were:

Profile 8 (Letter G) with feed (90) and spindle (18000)

Profile 9 (Letter H) with feed (100) and spindle (19000)

Individual assignment

First I sketch the design with the help of Ghfor:

It is a Book shelves with the shape of tree or a leaf, I decided to make this idea because I have many books and I want to put them all together in one place

### Design

1- Here is the body of the design:

2- Then I added the shelves with the center partition:

3- Next, I designed a stand for the whole design:

VCarve Pro Software

1- WE upload the DXF file to VCarve Pro:

2- Then add the dog bone (T bone) to the joints .. WHY?

In the field of CNC milling, a dog bone is just a method to bend a square so that it can accommodate another square. Since the mill may reach the circle during a pocket/contour operation, this form of dog bone does not require a special drilling procedure.

3- Arrange the pieces on the sheet

4- Final step

CNC Cutting

Details

  • The Sheet info: Medium-density fibreboard (MDF) is an engineered wood product made by breaking down hardwood or softwood residuals into wood fibres

Width(x): 2440mm

Height(y): 1220mm

Thickness(z): 12mm

1- I chose to cut on MDF sheet and this is while drilling the sheet on the other sheet:

2- Here while cutting the sheet:

3- After that, with the help of my brother we sand all the pieces:

4- Then, we combine the the shelves on the stand

5- And this is the final look after finishing
