2. Computer Aided design

Computer aided design (CAD) is a method of creating 2D drawings and 3D models of real-world products before they are ever manufactured. In this week I worked on exploring different 2D and 3D design softwares.

3D Design

“3D design is the process of using software to create a mathematical representation of a 3-dimensional object or shape. The created object is called a 3D model and these 3-dimensional models are used for computer-generated (CG) design. 3D design is used in a variety of industries to help artists shape, communicate, document, analyze, and share their ideas.”

Fusion 360

Fusion 360 is a 3D modeling software capable of modeling, simulation, and documentation. Developed by AutoCAD in 2013, it is a cloud-based system with a top-down approach. This means that it allows users to create larger structures, which are then broken down into smaller components. The user can modify each specific component as per his desires and requirements.

One of the designs I tried to made in fusion 360 was a wooden pens holder. The design was done following these steps:

  • Step 1: I started with a new sketch; then, I drew a circle following the steps shown in the image bellow

Note: It is preferable to start sketching the object from origin

  • Step 2:I pressed on “Finish Sketch”; then, I extruded the 2D circle to turn it to a 3D cylinder

  • Step 3: I started new sketch to add other details. I drew another circle at the top of the cylinder

  • Step 4: I extruded the second circle down to make the cylinder hollow

  • Step 5: I rounded the cylinder upper edges using the fillet tool

  • Step 6: I changed the design appearance to look wooden

Tinkercad

Tinkercad is another 3D modeling program, and it is known for its ease of use.

My very first design in tinkercad is a chrismas tree. I created the tree following these steps:

  • Step 1: I dragged a cylinder from the shapes section and changed its color to browm to represent the trunk of the tree

  • Step 2: I dragged a cone from the shapes section and changed its color to green to represent tree leaves

  • Step 3: I made sure that the two shapes are alligned to each other using the allignemnt tool

Personal Opinion

From my point of view, I think that TinkerCad is a better option for children and beginners, while Fusion 360 is better for those who want to prepare professional designs, as in contains many and varied features.

2D Design Softwares

The 2D design is the process of selecting the visual elements and understanding foundational principles of art and design. A designer is composing 2D designs with only 2 dimensions – length and width.

Cuttle

Cuttle is a design tool for cutting machines like laser cutters, digital die cutters, and CNC routers. It combines the vector editing capabilities of tools like Illustrator and Inkscape with the power of parametric CAD and programming.

As I am so intersented in accessories, I used Cuttle to design earings.

I designed the earings following these steps:

  • Step 1: I drew a hexagon and repeated it by the rational repeat tool as shown in the image bellow

  • Step 2: I modified the shape by adding an outline using the outline stroke feature

  • Step 3: I drew a circle at the top of the first shape and modified it by adding an outline to represent an open jump ring

Note: An open jump ring is a small metal loop with a narrow cut that works as an opening.

  • Step 4: I merged the shapes together using the Bolean Union feature

Inkscape

Inkscape is a program for creating and editing vector graphics. It is the ideal tool for drawing logos and icons, creating (animatable) graphics for websites, for composing posters and flyers, or for making patterns for use with cutting machines and laser engravers.

My very first design in inkscape was a graduation logo. I designed the logo following these steps:

Step 1: I drew 3 circles on each other, each circle with different size and color

Step 2: I drew a graduation cap using the rectangle shape. Then, I grouped all the shapes together

Personal Opinion

After I tried the two software, I think that both of them perform a great job and are easy to use. However, I may lean somewhat towards using Cuttle because I have previous experiences with it.
