6. Casting and Moulding¶
Casting: Casting involves pouring a liquid material (often metal, plastic, or glass) into a mold and allowing it to solidify.
Applications: Used for making complex shapes and parts like engine blocks, sculptures, and jewelry.
Moulding: Molding involves shaping a material by pressing it into a mold cavity, where it is then allowed to set or cure.
Applications: Common in manufacturing items like plastic bottles, automotive parts, and household goods.
Testing of materials¶
We were asked to test materials for casting such as
1 Soap
2 Silicon
3 Resin
4 Gypsum
Each group did one test, my group tested Gypsum
Gypsum Testing¶
1 we did a research for what we should mix with it and what the ratio was.
-mix with water
-1L of water with 1.25Kg of gypsum
2 we measured how much liquid should be poured in the container.
- Note: add more Grams just in case.
Total of 10 grams.
3 We calculated how much we need from each material
-4.44 grams of water with 5.55 grams of gypsum
4 We did the mixture
-We placed a bowl on the scale and set it on zero.
-Add 4.44 grams water
-On another plate add 5.55 grams gypsum.
-Start to mix them
-pour the mixture into the mould
We repeat the test to check the best ratio, these are the results
This is how it looks when poured
And this is when its dried
FINAL product
At the end, we recommend using the ratio which was 4.44g water to 5.55g gypsum.
Individual Project¶
1 I chose a logo to work on
2 I sketched it on Fusion360
3 Upload it to (Cool Borwo) as an stl.
Cool Borwo¶
1 Set the scales on the xyz axis
2 Select the type of milling
3 Create tool path for roughing
4 Create tool path for finishing
5 Preview results
6 Perform Cutting
Then just wait for the milling to finish.
Making of the mold¶
1 Calculate the amount of liquid needed for the mold.
2 Make a mixture of silicon and hardener of a ratio of 1:1
- Silicon
-Hardener
3 Pour one glass into the other and mix for 2 minutes and them pour them to the other and mix them for another 2 minutes.
4 Pour it in the cavity we made
5 Take a stick and pock it to remove the bubbles that occur in the middle.
6 Put on a side and wait for it to dry.
Making of casting¶
1 Calculate the amount of liquid needed for the casting.
2 make a mixture of resin and hardener
10 grams of resin, and 6 grams of hardener.
3 Pour one glass into the other and mix for 2 minutes and them pour them to the other and mix them for another 2 minutes.
4 Add a drop of color to it and mix it.
5 Pour it in the mold we made.
6 Take a stick and pock it to remove the bubbles that occur in the middle.
7 Put on a side and wait for it to dry.
8 Remove from mold after it dries.
