6. Large format CNC (computer controlled Machining)¶
This week’s objective was to create something significant using the large piece of wood provided for the CNC machine. The tasks were divided into two parts:
1.Group Task - This was a smaller assignment to test the feed rates and speeds of the CNC machine, helping us gain a basic understanding of its operation through a simple project.
2.Individual Task - In this task, each person was responsible for designing an item, cutting it with the CNC machine, and then assembling the final product.
Group Work¶
This week, the group assignment was completed by Batool.
Individual Work¶
Initially, after reviewing the available measurements, we needed to brainstorm a useful item for our home. The design had to incorporate a joint mechanism for securing the pieces together. Once I identified the type of wood available, I realized that what I really wanted was a laptop table that could be easily adjusted for use on the floor or on the sofa.
Design process¶
My first step was to conceptualize the design and determine how to create a sturdy wooden laptop table. I began by searching the internet for existing wooden laptop tables and gathered the following results: Design 1 Design 2 Design 3 There are many other designs that we chose not to include to keep the information concise for the reader. However, these designs provided enough inspiration for my desired shape. I collected various details from the designs and used SolidWorks to create my own design.
SolidWork Design¶
The design was finalized using SolidWorks, and this is a sample of the completed design.
CNC Machining¶
After finalizing the design, it was exported in DXF format and then processed on the CNC machine until it was cut.
After taking the necessary measurements to determine the Z-axis point and entering it into the device’s program, we began the cutting process, which lasted an hour and 45 minutes. Here are some photos of the machine in action as it cut the pieces.
Due to the poor quality of the plywood, I had to widen the openings and smooth the edges to prevent any sharp points that could cause injury while using the table. Additionally, I finished the plywood with 600 sandpaper for a smoother surface.
Final Design¶
To ensure the table’s strength, I asked Ahmed to place a laptop on it with light pressure. We observed satisfactory results, demonstrating its durability, as shown in the following pictures.
