Week 7 Large format CNC (computer controlled Machining)¶
CNC Machine¶
A CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machine is a sophisticated manufacturing tool that automates the control of machinery through computer programming. By utilizing precise instructions in the form of code, CNC machines can accurately cut, shape, and carve materials such as metal, wood, plastic, and more. These machines are widely used in various industries, including aerospace, automotive, and woodworking, due to their ability to produce complex parts with high precision and repeatability. The integration of CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software allows for the seamless transition from design to production, enhancing efficiency and reducing human error. Overall, CNC technology has revolutionized the manufacturing process, making it faster and more efficient.
Parametric Design¶
Parametric design offers a wide range of possibilities for CNC machining, and among these options, I have chosen to focus on creating a table. This choice allows me to explore various design elements such as dimensions, materials, and structural integrity. By utilizing parametric design software, I can easily manipulate parameters like leg height, tabletop thickness, and overall dimensions to create a customized piece that meets specific aesthetic and functional requirements. Additionally, I can experiment with different styles, such as modern, rustic, or minimalist, while ensuring that the design remains practical for manufacturing. The iterative nature of parametric design also means that I can efficiently make adjustments and optimize the table’s design for both production efficiency and user experience. Ultimately, this project not only enhances my skills in CNC machining but also allows me to produce a unique and functional piece of furniture that can be tailored to individual needs.
Designing¶
This week, we will focus on implementing a parametric design approach in our projects. Parametric design allows us to create complex forms and structures by defining parameters and rules that govern their behavior. By adjusting these parameters, we can explore various design iterations efficiently, fostering innovation and creativity. This method is particularly useful in architecture, product design, and computational art, as it enables us to achieve both aesthetic and functional outcomes while responding to specific constraints and requirements. Let’s leverage this technique to enhance our design process and produce unique results.
In the first step I draw a circle sketch and I usu Extrude tool to make the thikness 12 mm
Also I create a user parameter to to make all my size of design
I drew the base using the measurements of the parametric user to make the base perfect in size.
I drew the other base the same way.
Then I draw a rectangle after that I use the Extrude tool to cut the rectangle and make a joint.
I use the same thing with the head of table.
This is my final result:
Setup on Machine¶
On the CNC app I open my design and I fix the postion to put the design in the specific place
Before start and make the machine work I need to fix the postion wood on the table.
I need to put the right bit for the drill.
I give the machine my thikness and I test the electrical source.
I chose the power and speed of machine
Important Safety and Security Matters¶
When using CNC machines, safety is crucial to prevent accidents. Operators should wear personal protective equipment (PPE) like safety glasses and ear protection, and ensure they are trained on the specific machine. Regular checks of the equipment and securing workpieces are essential. Staying alert, knowing emergency stop procedures, and maintaining a tidy workspace help minimize risks. Electrical safety is important; ensure proper wiring and avoid overloading. Using dust collection systems and proper ventilation can mitigate inhalation hazards. Finally, always power down the machine and clean the workspace after use to maintain a safe environment.
Start Cut the Design¶
To start the design I need to make sure if every thing is clear to work machine with out any mistak.
After that I go to my design and select all point that I need to cut it.
Then to save the design I have to click on the Save Toolpath
After that on the desktop we have to use all file and we will save it there
To start the machine I switch it On then I click on the Cut Part and I target my fill that name was all.
I click on the START to make the machine work then I cklick OK now machine will start cut
In this steps we must make sure to wear glasses to protect against wood debris.
We have to wait while the machine cuts the design.
Then I remove the component from the board
I start sanding the wood before installation.
After that I start fix the component
The second piece, this is the final result
