Personal contribution - Design of Housing

3D designs

Housing is the face of the face of the product, it is the customer’s first impression, and based on this impression the customer decides whether they will consider buying it or no. Therefore, Great care must be put in external aesthetics and physical appearance of the device. However, aesthetics is not all, the housing must house all the component in safe and appropriate manner.

Model 1

At the start of the project, when we just picked the project, I created a concept design to what I imaged the dispenser would look like.

You can download the model from here as SLDPRT.

You can download the model from here AS STL file.

However, this is just a concept design without no real dimensions or consideration of mechanism space occupance.

Model 2

The next design were more advanced, it was parametric and with consideration for real dimensions and mechanism. This design was heavily inspired by the this youtube video here.

You can download the model from here as SLDPRT.

You can download the model from here AS STL file.

However, this design is too big to fit in the printer and too complex to be created in CNC or laser; therefore it was discarded.

Model 3

from the tests and experiments we ran through the 8 weeks, we concluded that 3D designs would not be the best choice to creating the housing of or project due to several reasons:

  • The bed size of the printer is limited, hence no design bigger than 220mm x 220mm x 250mm could be printed.

  • The printer takes long time to print. Even though, the Creality k1 has a maximum speed of 600 mm/s it still gonna take hours to print all the pieces.

  • The printer is on high demand between the student. therefore, even if you are printing a small object multiple parts would be with you so it will take longer.

  • Printing such a big part will occupy the printer for a long time depriving the other groups from using it.

Due to all the reasons mentioned above we resorted to the Laser cutting machine, it is fast, reliable, and do not as busy as the printer. We choose acrylic as material.

Below is the concept design of model 3:

As you can see above this is the final concept design of the housing and the design that we adopted.

You can download the model from here as SLDPRT.

You can download the model from here AS STL file.

since all the group members agreed on model 3, I had to create the individual parts at their own and then make an assembly of the all the pieces.

You can download the model from here AS STL file.
You can download the model from here AS DXF file.

After finishing this design, we used the Laser cutting machine to cut the design to get a real-life scale of the design and to confirm that the components’ slots (LCD, Joystick, button, LEDs, and speaker) actually fits.

After creating this, I had to move to a different task, therefore, I handed the design to my group mate Hassan Mandeel who made few changes and added holes for the bolt and then cut it using the Laser cutting machine. Therefore, for to see the final appearance and the get the files visit his website Hassan Mandeel.
