5. Large format CNC¶
This week, we tested the CNC machine and used it to design and cut a large piece.
Whats CNC manufacturing?
“Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining is a manufacturing process in which pre-programmed computer software dictates the movement of factory tools and machinery. The process can be used to control a range of complex machinery, from grinders and lathes to mills and CNC routers.”
Group Assignment¶
CNC machine testing and safety requirements 1- engraving with different settings. 2- Joint test
The work can be found on: Group Assignmrnt - week05
Individual Assignment¶
Using a CNC machine to design, cut, and assemble a large item with press-fit joints.
For the individual task, I plan to design a rocking chair.
Design¶
My design was created using Fusion 360. I was drawn to this design for two reasons: * I am able to use it at home. * It’s easy and cool.
1- Begin with a 2D drawing of two ovals to represent the stand’s seat and back. They measure 100cm long by 57.2cm width, differing in joints only.
2- Then I created the other two sides, the right and left sides each with a length and width of 100 cm * 57.2 cm. One joint is longer than the other to connect to the side of the seat and the shorter joint is to connect to the back side.
Note: Because part of the design data is regarded as constant, I placed it as a parameters in Fusion 360 to speed up the design process as well as extensive adjustments.
3- I wrote the words “Yes, it’s dangerous… that’s why it’s fun!!” on the seat from the side so that whoever is seated can see it.
Fabrication¶
- Start by importing the dxf file into VCarve Pro to create the toolpath.
- Verify that the design doesn’t contain any open vectors or duplicate vectors stacked on top of one another.
- When I viewed the text in VCarve closely, I saw that it was little and would not be engraved well. I attempted to relocate it to a larger location, but it was inefficient, so I removed it.
-
To prevent the components from moving while you are generating the pocket, start the toolpath cutting process with the pocket and then continue on to the cutting.
-
The number of passes, or how many times the drill would run over the material, was set to two.
-
To ensure that it is cutting it accurately, the depth of cut was set to 14mm, which is greater than the thickness of the sheet (13mm).
- for the joints, I applied the dog-bone.
Dog bones are a fantastic technique to put vertical plates into horizontal plates without worrying about the radius left by the cutter. The size of the dog bones required is determined by the thickness and size of that part.
- Then, download the toolpath to the machine
- Select the file to be cut
Result¶
Because the pieces are huge and don’t have many tiny details, so the procedure took less than an hour.
The machine finished the pieces perfectly, and then we started securing them together by connecting joints.
The completed result was there after attaching all of the components together
