4. Computer Controlled Cutting¶
This week, I learned how to use the Vinyl Cutter Device, operate the Laser Cutter, and create a parametric press-fit construction kit. I’m excited about these new skills and these will help me in my final project at university.
CO2 Laser Cutting Machine¶
A CO2 laser cutting machine is a versatile tool that can effectively cut through a wide range of materials with varying thicknesses. Depending on the power of the laser and the type of material, CO2 laser cutters can typically handle materials ranging from thin materials like paper and fabric to thicker materials such as wood, acrylic, and even metal sheets.
Model | Laser source | Working area | Laser power | Min line width |
---|---|---|---|---|
STJ1390 | CO2 laser | 1300*900mm | 80W/100W/130W/150W/220W/300W | ≤0.15mm |
By creating simple shapes in the Cuttle program, we conducted tests on the machine, varying parameters such as distance, power, and speed to observe their effects on the laser-cutting process. Each test yielded distinct outcomes, with some cuts showing signs of burning or remaining partially attached to the board.
We also about the “Kerf Check Parts Generator”, This tool allows you to check the kerf, which is the width of material removed by a cutting process. You can set the base width (start), pitch width, and the number of repetitions (loops) to generate parts. Once generated, you can download the parts.
My Work in Laser Cutting Machine¶
1- First, I used cuttle.xyz to create my 2D shape by drawing two circles, one with a diameter of 90 mm and the other with a diameter of 120 mm.
2- After using “Boolean Difference” to shape it like a crescent moon, I added small rectangles to allow for a connection between the two circles.
My design features two shapes: one with the rectangle positioned outside and another with the rectangle placed inside.
3- Final shape for both parts
4- Downloading as DXF

Types of Press-Fit¶
1-Slot-Based Press-Fit
The type of press-fit in my design is a slot-based press-fit. This is a common assembly method where slots are designed to allow parts to interlock without additional fasteners. It relies on friction and precise tolerances to hold the pieces together. This method is widely used in prototyping, cardboard models, and modular design systems.
2-Tab-and-Slot Press-Fit
The design involves tabs on one piece that are inserted into matching slots on another piece. To use this method, ensure that the tabs and slots are designed to match the material thickness, slightly oversizing the tab width for a tighter fit. This approach offers several advantages, including ease of fabrication, reusability, and strong structural integrity. It is particularly useful in applications such as modular assemblies and quick prototyping.
3-Snap-Fit
The design features a part with flexible tabs that snap into a slot or hole. To implement this, the tabs should be designed with slight bends to facilitate easy snapping into the receiving slot. This method offers notable advantages, such as simple assembly and disassembly without the need for glue. It is particularly well-suited for applications involving lightweight structures.
Vinyl Cutter Device¶
A Vinyl Cutter Device is a tool that cuts vinyl material to create stickers, decals, and designs. It works by following digital patterns to precisely cut the vinyl sheet, allowing for the creation of customized graphics and signage.
Cricut¶
Cricut is a company that sells smart cutting machines and accessories for DIY crafting projects. It offers a variety of tools, supplies, and project ideas to help users create personalized crafts with ease. I use there program to choose one of there desgin to use.
Steps to Create in Cricut¶
1- Create an account in Cricut and download their program
2-Select ‘Set up a cutting machine’ to start or Design Without a Machine
3-Select Images from left bar and search for deer
4- After using the machine, that will be the result
