7. Large format CNC (computer controlled Machining)

What is CNC:

CNC stands for Computer Numerical Control, a technology that uses computer programs to automate and precisely control the operation of machine tools like mills, lathes, and routers. CNC enables highly automated, efficient, and repeatable manufacturing processes across various industries.

Group Assignment

In the group assignment covered the fundamentals of CNC machine operation, including workpiece fixturing, speed/feed settings, and toolpath testing - all while emphasizing safety protocols.

Individual Assignment

For the individual assignment, we had to design and create a piece that one of the sides is 70 cm or above. The most important condition for this assignment was the use of joints only. We were not allowed to assemble the result with screws or glue and should rely solely on the joints we make using the wood itself. Also, our parts should not exceed the sheet which its size is:

Designing Process

My idea was to design a stand that fits my printers. I drew a simple sketch to determine the dimensions and all the details of the design.

I used Fusion 360 to design the product, and after finshing I exported it as a dxf file.

.

Cutting Process

  • I planned to use the plywood material to cut.

  • Here while the machine is cutting after sending the design to the machine software.

  • After the cut done:

  • Sanding

  • Because I chosed to work with the plywood, it got lots of sharps after cutting and it needs lots of sanding.

  • I started sanding the parts and it took lots of time.

  • Staining

  • After I finished sanding, I started painting the parts using the woodstain.

  • Press-fit + Final Results

  • Here After Assempling the parts and join them together:

  • Here my workspace before and after, and we can see how it is is now organized.
