6. Large format CNC (computer controlled Machining)

This week we worked on the CNC machine, from creating our own designs and choosing our preferred mething useful anmaterials. This was the biggest project we made as the product was something useful and usable.

We had to create something with joints, so my vision was to create somethung unique, and most importantly useful for whoever is going to use it, and implement the joint requirement in the design.

I decided to create a side table with a twist, and the twist is a book shelf.

Design Process

I started creating my design using Fusion360

The first thing I created was a circle (the top of the table) and cut out one quarter of the circle for the shelf.

Then, I created the shelf part seperately and included joints for joining it with the table legs.

Finally, I created the legs with joints

I had all my design parts ready, so I put them all together to see how the final product would look like before cutting it.

After assuring everything was fine, I was ready to start cutting it using the CNC.

I exported the file and opened it in VCarve Pro.

Then, I used the ‘Dog-Bone Fillet’ command to smooth out all corners of the joints to make sure the CNC cuts them perfectly.

Next, I adjusted the number of passes to 2, which is the number of times the machine will repeat cutting.

Finally, I made sure all parts are ready to be cut.

I started cutting the parts.

Final Touches

Finally, for the last and most exciting part, I started putting all the pieces together.
