Week 03: Computer Controlled Cutting¶
This week, I worked on implementing my ideas and adjusting the measurements to align my concepts with my project. I also learned to use two cutting machines, the laser cutter and the vinyl cutter, to create something beautiful.
Group Assignment¶
In the group task, we worked on various aspects such as measuring the kerf, ensuring the focus, and adjusting the joint size for the material we planned to use, to achieve precision using a machine called GV Laser. My task was to demonstrate how to use the laser machine, and I carried it out with love and precision. Visit my Group Site to see more. We worked with speed 45 and power 45.
Individual Assignment¶

↝ Inspirations¶
From Cuttle I made my design, taking inspirations from Pinterest.
Wanted to create a tree filled with autumn spirits.
↝ Idea¶
But I’m not sure why I want to make a basket-box—Maybe because I can always change it whenever I want!
↝ Sketching the Idea¶
So I start sketching the shape immediately.
↝ Using Cuttle¶
I set a parametric values for Square to 3 and Joint width to 1.1mm.
I drag 2 rectangles to make a square and joints with rectangle shape.
I scaled the square with the parameter I set.
I scaled the joint width too, by putting the width in x axis.
After that, I tried to arrange the shapes to be in the form I wanted.
Once I selected everything, I navigated to Modify and chose Boolean Difference.
And that’s the final shape of my square.
For the triangle I converted the square into paths.
Then I deleted a line and match the other lines with each other to make a triangle.
Using the same joint sizes, I applied the same process to the triangle, with some adjustments made to the rotation.
And that’s the final shape of my triangle.
This is my final collection, I did the same for others.
Now you need to export it as a .dxf file. Since Cuttle can’t handle high accuracy, I used Inkscape for the conversionــــــــ
Okay.. never mind, poor people like us must export few times, if you got this window or about to get one.
Use this: Share > Public > Copy Link. When editing the file, click Publish this version when you’re done to upload it.
Note: You need to export it as a .dxf file. However, since Cuttle can’t handle high accuracy, you might need to use another software. I recommend Inkscape.
↝ Laser Machine¶
If you’re curious about how to use the machine, visit my Group Site and check out the How to Use the Machine section.
Configuring the settings in the software before transferring to the laser machine.

☆ My Failures¶
Don’t get me wrong, I’m proud and happy that I didn’t give up on the idea!
I just have to share this beauty 👍
Thanks to Zainab Abbas for lending me her cup.

↪ Stickers¶
From google, I picked a pixel star image.
↝ Silhouette Studio¶
Used Vinyl Cutter Machine with Silhouette Studio to the following steps:
↝ Vinyl Machine¶
Before sending, make sure to follow these steps:
- Connect the cutter to your computer.
- Prepare the material and load it using the cutter’s options.
After sending view:
- Note that you can Pause the machine at any time to stop it. Once finished, you can unload it to retrieve your result.
