5. 3D printing and scanning

3D Printing, also known as additive manufacturing, is a process of creating a three-dimensional object layer by layer using a computer-generated design. It involves building up layers of material to form the final 3D part. The process begins with designing a digital model using software, which is then translated into instructions that the 3D printer can execute. Materials such as thermoplastics, metals, glass, paper, or wood are used by the printer to transform the digital design into a physical object.

We experimented with two 3D printers from Creality: the Creality Ender 3 and Ultimaker. Both models are recognized for their reliability and robustness.

When comparing Ultimaker and Creality 3D printers, several factors should be considered:

  1. Build Quality: Creality printers are noted for their sturdy construction and precise design, ensuring durability and reliability. Ultimaker printers are generally more budget-friendly but may have slightly lower build quality.

  2. Print Quality: Creality printers excel in producing highly detailed and accurate prints with smooth surfaces. Ultimaker printers, while capable, may not achieve the same level of precision and detail.

  3. Ease of Use: Creality printers are designed to be user-friendly with intuitive interfaces and straightforward software, providing a seamless printing experience. Ultimaker printers may require more technical knowledge and adjustment for optimal results.

In our group project, we successfully printed a 3D object, demonstrating Creality’s high-quality output.

Additionally, I utilized SketchUp to design an 8x8x8 cm³ box, which serves as a functional brush holder. The modeling process was clean and yielded a finished product ready for use.

The Xbox Kinect, a motion-sensing input device discontinued by Microsoft, was first released in 2010. It captured motion in 360 degrees, creating a 3D representation of users. It offered versatile applications and could be integrated into various forms, including 3D printing.
