5. 3D printing and scanning¶
Task¶
- Design and 3D print an object (small, few cm3, limited by printer time) that could not be easily made subtractively
- 3D scan an object (and optionally print it)

3D printing¶
for this week,we were asked to design an object and export it as an stl format to be printed.
About 3D printing¶
3D printing is the method of creating 3D items with melted filaments like PLA and FDM in thin layers utilizing heat.
There are also variable settings such as the percentage of internal filling which depends on certain model designs and how balanced they are.For most “standard” prints that don’t need to be super strong,an infill density of 15-50% is preffered. This density percentage keeps print time low, conserves material, and provides enough strength.
Accuracy is another rvariable in 3D printing where one model could look different from one 3D printing machine to the other and some of the main factors could be the thickness of the fillament thickness, temerature, and flow rate.
Support structures are also important in 3D printers where each layer depends on the layer underneath it for support, however when there is an overhang of more than 45 degrees in the design, then a support system is needed.
3D Design on Fusion¶
the object chosed is a heart box with hinges designed on fusion
this is the process of the 3D printing of the box

3D Printing on ultimaker 2¶
the 3D printing machine used for this task is the Ultimakwer2 where the design is stored in an SD card and plugged in th emachine to be printed
3D Scanning Software¶
the 3D scanning software used is SKANECT which allows to scan people. this allowes to use the stl scan as human scale in architectural renders.
first, sit infront of the camera and hit space then rotate slowly so that the camera scansall sides
then click on “process” and then on “fill holes” to fill any areas needed, then click on “run” to activate the command
then click on “water tight” to soften any edges that need to be fixed in the scan
then click on “remove colors” to return the scan to it’s previous look
finally, click on “share” then export the scan as an stl format
3D Scanning app¶
to 3D scan on an app, downlaodthis app. this app could help 3D scan objects with our phone and download stl formats.
the first thing to do after opening the app is to choose “mesh”
then choose the size of the object that will be scanned. in this case, the object is small.
record the object from all angles and once coplete, click on “Detail”
this is how the object looks like after scanning it
finally, save it,click on save> export model> stl
