7. Large format CNC (Computer Controlled Machining)

This week, we had the opportunity to learn how to use a CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machine. We started by studying the safety procedures and understanding the different components and joints involved in operating the machine.

To begin the project, we were tasked with designing our own custom creations. I chose to design a nail polish and makeup shelf using SketchUp.

I carefully added all the necessary joints and used the VCarve ShopBot Edition software to apply the dog bone fillet technique to all the edges and joints. Once the design was finalized, I arranged the 13 individual pieces on a wood panel and initiated the cutting process on the CNC machine.

After the pieces were successfully cut out, I moved on to sanding all the components, ensuring smooth edges and a clean finish.

With the individual parts prepared, I then began the assembly process, carefully hammering the pieces together.

The final result of my nail polish and makeup shelf project was quite impressive, exceeding my initial expectations. The CNC machine allowed me to bring my custom design to life with precision and efficiency.

Through this hands-on experience, I gained a deeper understanding of the CNC machine’s capabilities, the importance of safety protocols, and the process of transforming a digital design into a tangible, functional object.
