7. Moulding and casting

Group Assignment

I worked on soap material for casting and silicon for molding

Material name: “Oatmeal” melt & pour soap based

Safety: keep away from eyes

Mix ratio (if applicable): Nope

Work time 20 sec - 1 min in microwave Cure time 4 hours note that it depend on the quantity of soap the more you put the more it takes

Cured material state: Solid

Process

1- Choose material and cut desired portion

2- Put the soap inside the microwave in a microwaveable cup.

3- Heat it for 10 seconds then take it out and stir with wood stick

4- Repeat the previous step until the soap becomes liquid.

5- Remember you have 2 minutes before the material hardens.

6- Add fragments or color.

7- pour it in your desired mold.

Design limitation

Hight max: 8mm Width & length max: 60mm Gap min: 1.6mm

Choose Model

Since I like “That Time I Got Reincarnated as Slime” anime, i decide to make the main character a slime called “Rimuru Tampest” as model for casting.

Design in 3D Software

1- Insert picture then use fit point spline tool to draw on the picture. After that use the mirror effect to make sure it symmetrical in case if you want to be a double sided. Add hole for medal.

2- Revolve the for 2mm alt text

3- Extrude it to fill the shape from down

Create Mold 1

This mold is combination of wax and plastic and we cut it with small CNC machine.

alt text

1- Every wax mold must have 2 design. so we use “TinkerCad” to combine the designs.

alt text

2- Open design file .stl

alt text

3- Surface the wax for smooth cutting

alt text

alt text

4- Change type of milling & edit tool for finishing & roughening then create tool path

alt text

5- if you don’t use finishing tool this will be the result

alt text

6- Click “show model” to see how the final cut will be.

alt text

7- To separate designs: Edit –> roughing –> all cut –> partial –> select area by resizing red square –> apply –> repeat for finishing and copies.

8- Cutting

9- Change drill bits

Create Mold 2

This mold is a casting of wax mold (rigid) which is a silicon material (flexible)

1- Make sure the wax mold is clean & dry.

2- Wear gloves & lab coat (safety first).

3- Wight the desired casting which 50% of liquid A and 50% of liquid B separately in cups (use spoon to as measurement tool).

alt text

alt text

4- Pour cup A in cup B and stir for 1 min then pour it back in cup A and mix it for 1 min.

alt text

5- Pour the mix in the wax mold.

alt text

6- Remove the air bubbles with wooden stick or heat gun.

alt text

7- Silicone must not be touched after the molding process until the curing is completed (24 hours).

Create Cast

this casting is called resin which will cast it on the silicon mold.

1- Wear gloves and make sure the safety equipment is available.

2- Put your measuring cup on the scale to measure the quantities. Open bottle A and B then pour 10 Resin: 6 Hardener.

alt text

3- Mix & Stir well for 3 mins until both blend.

alt text

4- Add a little bit of color as you wish and stir very well.

5- Pour your mix inside a silicone mold of a choice.

alt text

6- leave the artwork to cure for 24 hours until it hardens completely.

alt text

7- Remove your artwork carefully from the silicone mold.

Comment

This week, I learned the art of casting and molding, including the various types and essential safety precautions. I had a lot of fun casting with soap, though I wished there were larger molds and fragments to work with. When my resin got massed up while curing, I used a heat gun to fix the issue. One drawback is the lengthy curing time, which felt like it took forever. Overall, I really enjoyed the experience.
