5. 3D printing and scanning¶
During this week we worked on two main things, 3D printing and scannning. So, for the documentation I will present a brief description of 3D printing machine and then I will present what we have done during this week.
3D printing¶
What is 3D printing?¶
The method of creating three-dimensional items from a digital file is known as additive manufacturing or 3D printing. Additive methods are used in the production of 3D printed objects. In an additive process, material is applied in consecutive layers until the desired result is achieved. A finely sliced cross-section of the object may be viewed in each of these levels.
Types of 3D printers¶
According to the research I have made, there are three main types of 3D printers. There is stereolithography (SLA), selective laser sintering (SLS) and fused deposition modeling (FDM). The most common printer is FDM and this is because they are easy to use, cost-eefective, they can print wide range of materials and also they can produce prototypes quickly.
How does FDM printer works?¶
FDM printers heat up a plastic filament until it melts, then the melted plastic is deposited in layers, gradually forming the object. Each layer cools and solidifies before the next one is applied.
The printer that we have used in the lab is called Bambu Lab A1 and the table below shows some of its main technical specificqtions.

Group assignment¶
As a group, we were asked to find a 3D design using thingiverse and print it to test the 3D printer. So, we have chose the below design.
After choosing the design, we have sent the design by email and set the printer so it starts printing and you can see the final result below:
Indiviual assignment¶
Indiviually, we were asked to do three tasks choosing a design from thingiverse and print it, designing my own design using Fusion and designing a magnetic box.
Task 1¶
I have chose the below design and print it.
You can see the result below:
Task 2¶
I have used Fusion to design a mini perfume bottle as a gift for my friend.
You can see below how it looked liked after printing it and use it as a keychain
Task 3¶
This is the challenge task and it is basically designing a box with two holes for the maagnet. So, first I have measured the magnet diameter and depth. The diameter is 10 mm and the depth is 5 mm. Hence, I have designed my box accordingly. I have designed a box with a drawer so there are three components, the box, the cover and the drawer.
The box
The cover
The drawer
Scanning¶
Scanning nowadays is indispensable. We use it nearly everywhere and in important fields. For example, in the offices they use scanning for the documents and cards. In the medical field they use scanning for the injuries and one of the most widely used scan is MRI. Also, we use scanning in the retail and inventory to read QR codes.
For the scanning we did two things. First, we used our mobile phones to scan an object and the second thing was to scan ourselves using kinect gaming camera. There are plenty of applications for scanning using our mobile phones. So, I used scaniverse to can a mini car by following steps shown below:
You can see the result below:
For scanning ourselves we used skanect by following the below steps:
