6. Molding and casting¶
This Weeks’ Task¶
Design a 3D mould around the stock and tooling that you’ll be using, mill it (rough cut + (at least) three-axis finish cut), and use it to cast parts.

This weeks assignment is really fun! It looks like a small CNC machine but can carve 3d designs.
First, I’m going to explain what is molding and casting.
WHAT IS MOLDING?¶
is the act of creating the cavity or a form that carries a negative or reverse impression of an original model. It is creating duplicates of the model the mold was made from. The resulting cast will be an exact likeness of the shape of the hollow mold form.. For this assignment we used Machinable wax and silicon to create the mold.
Also, their is different types of molding: One part (one face). Two parts (Close Box). Multi parts ( Complex shape).

WHAT IS CASTING?¶
is the act of pouring liquid material into the cavity of a mold. After a period of time, this liquid will cure and create an object Casting materials are usually metals or various cold setting materials that cure after mixing two or more components together; examples are resin, concrete, plaster and clay. I used in this assignment resin as a casting material.

I’m doing a one Faced Mold:

Now it’s time to create the mold by the Machinable wax.
Time to add the silicon!
Added the silicon and waiting for it to cure for the next step.
CASTING THE DESIGN¶
I stared to weight the resin to add the same amount of the liquids that should be mixed.
Mixing the liquids slowly to prevent any bubbles to form.
Adding the resin to the silicon mold. Note: I added another type of silicon to the edges to prevent the resin of leaking.
Final result after spray painting it.
