Auto Cryptic Calendar with Digital Clock - Project Documentation¶
Final Project Video¶
Project Brief¶
Our project is an Auto Cryptic Calendar combined with a Digital Clock. The aim of this project is to create a unique and visually engaging calendar that not only displays the date and time but also incorporates a cryptic pattern that rotates as the date changes. This calendar is designed to intrigue and challenge viewers while serving as a functional piece of art.
Features:¶
- Cryptic Calendar: The centerpiece of the project is a rotating ring that displays the date using a cryptic pattern. As the days change, the pattern shifts, creating an ever-changing visual puzzle.
- Digital Clock: The project also includes a digital clock display that shows the current time in a clear and easily readable format.
- Design Aesthetics: The project combines technology and aesthetics, resulting in a visually appealing piece that sparks curiosity and engagement.
Research and Concept¶
In the initial phase, we researched various types of cryptic calendars and decided to create a rotating ring calendar with a cryptic pattern. We found that using the Porker font for the cryptic pattern was a popular choice in similar projects. Materials such as an LCD screen, a stepper motor, and other components were identified.
Design and Modeling¶
Using Fusion 360, we meticulously designed the project components:
- Faceplate: Created a faceplate with a window frame and an LCD screen slot based on precise measurements.
- Rings: Designed the main ring with the ring gear and cryptic numbers, reserving space for the LCD screen and other elements.
- Backplate: Developed a supporting backplate for the ring and stepper motor, with additional components above the ring.
- Component Visualization: Utilized grabcad to add realistic models of components like the LCD screen, stepper motor, breadboard, and Arduino Nano.
Fabrication Process¶
CNC and Laser Cutting¶
- Materials: The project parts were fabricated from acrylic and wood.
- CNC Cutting: Acrylic sheets were precisely cut using CNC machining to create the intricate design components.
- Laser Cutting: Wood pieces were laser-cut to ensure accuracy and detail in creating the supporting backplate.
Assembly¶
The assembly was handled collaboratively with my teammate, Ali Hussain. The process included:
- Ring Assembly: Mounting the ring gear and cryptic numbers on the main ring.
- Motor Installation: Placing the stepper motor securely on the backplate.
- Component Integration: Integrating the LCD screen, Arduino Nano, and breadboard into the design.
- Wiring: Connecting the electronic components and ensuring proper functionality.

Conclusion¶
Our Auto Cryptic Calendar with Digital Clock merges art and technology to create an innovative and intriguing piece. The combination of the rotating cryptic pattern and digital time display showcases our dedication to both aesthetics and functionality. The project’s fabrication and assembly processes were carefully executed to ensure the final product meets our vision and expectations.
