4. Computer controlled cutting¶
This week I learned computer controlled using the laser cutter, and Vinyl Cutter by designing and cutting parametric press fit kit.
Group assignment¶
My task in the group assignment was to find how to determine position of the focal point of the laser “the point where the laser focuses”.
From my research in the internet there’s a lot of methods to do this here’s two method’s.
1- Cutting multiple cuts into the material with different z positions and the deepest cut would represent the focal point.
2- Cutting a material in an incline of an angle about 10 degrees and watching either the burn or melting marks if using wood or plastic of the cut depth by that we can determine the focal point.
we chose to do the second method because its faster and it saves material.

Individual Assignment¶
Laser Cutter¶
press fit kit¶
for this Assignment I used Cuttle a 2D designing website, to make a simple cube.
I started with the faces of the cube (squares).
then I created a new component for the grove (so the design becomes parametric)
after that I added the grove to the square with rotational repeat and Boolean difference to get
then I went to design the joint that are going to hold up the structure
then I took the design to the machine set the settings
here I imported the file to the laser cutter software
then I set the proper sitting for my material 3mm cardboard
the started cutting
and got
putting multiple of them together
here is the pdf Files

Vinyl Cutter¶
for this task I Chose something simple but beautiful, few line from a poem to AlBoseri called “Alborda - البردة”, using Inkscape.
then I cut a piece of sticker
and got
after that I picked what the waste material and got
I faced some problems with the design.
mainly because the tones on the letters were too small which made it hard to peal.
however, even though this was one of the simplest projects I have made in FabLab yet I like it the most.
