2. Computer Aided design

For the second week of the program, I focused on learning how to model on fusion 360 and Inkscape. As seen below, the process and final product of my designs are shown. The main objective of this weeks assignment was to understand the difference between raster and vector based images. Vector graphics are made of mathematical formulas that draws a shape or route while raster graphics are made of pixels to display an image (less quality when zoomed in). Using fusion 360, we were able to use parametric designs which uses mathematical functions and algorithmic processes. As opposed to generative design, parametric design is a process where parameters are inserted into a design tool which generates the best structure using the values inserted.

Inkscape

For my first 2D design I have decided to use Inkscape to create a logo. The first step was to open a new document and use the text tool to type my initials as the base of the logo. After inserting the text, I scaled it up using the arrow logo and holding down shift.

The next step is to ungroup the letters to adjust the placement and design the logo. To do that, you need to ensure there are nodes on the letters by adjusting the path. 1. Path > Object to Path > Ungroup objects I reduced the opacity of the letters using the tool bar on the right. I then moved the letters around and linked them.

Cuttle and Blender

For the first 2D Design, I used Blender to model a basic house. The technique used was to draw half of the house and mirror the second half. Then using the X,Y, and Z planes, I added some depth.

For the next 2D Design I have used the program Cuttle to create different designs using geometric shapes as shown below. Cuttle is an online program that is easy to navigate to create different designs. I have played around with the tools to mimic different islamic patterns.

Fusion 360

I used Fusion360 to create a 3D model of an existing stool. I used the X,Y, and Z plane as a base for my model. Using the different tools, I started by drawing a 2D elevation and using the offset tool to remove the shape in the center. I then continued by extruding the shape to get some depth.
