5. 3D printing and scanning

3D Printing

3D printing or additive manufacturing is the construction of a three-dimensional object from a digital 3D model. It can be done in a variety of processes in which material is deposited, joined or solidified under computer control, with material being added together, typically layer by layer.

3D printing Material

Polylactic Acid, commonly known as PLA, is one of the most popular materials used in desktop 3D printing. It is the default filament of choice for most extrusion-based 3D printers because it can be printed at a low temperature and does not require a heated bed. PLA is a great first material to use as you are learning about 3D printing because it is easy to print, very inexpensive, and creates parts that can be used for a wide variety of applications. It is also one of the most environmentally friendly filaments on the market today.

3D Printing Machines

Prusa

The Prusa i3 series consists of open source fused deposition modeling 3D printers, manufactured by Czech company Prusa Research under the trademarked name Original Prusa i3. Part of the RepRap project, Prusa i3 printers were named the most used 3D printer in the world.

MAKERBOT

  • MakerBot Industries, LLC is an American desktop 3D printer manufacturer company headquartered in New York City. It was founded in January 2009 by Bre Pettis, Adam Mayer, and Zach “Hoeken” Smith to build on the early progress of the RepRap Project.
  • for the construction,In keeping with the Cartesian FDM design, the Replicator utilizes the common Z18 1.8° step angle with 1/16 micro-stepping motor configuration printing at a set layer resolution of 100 microns with a standard 0.4 mm nozzle
  • it can reach 18 inches in the Z axis and 12 inches along the X and Y axis
  • It is limited to 1.75 mm diameter PLA.
  • It includes a 320 X 240 resolution onboard camera that takes reference pictures every few seconds for monitoring through the MakerBot app

Ultimaker Cura

Cura is an open source slicing application for 3D printers. It was created by David Braam who was later employed by Ultimaker, a 3D printer manufacturing company,Cura is free to use, open-source software compatible with a wide range of 3D printers.

3D Scanning

3D scanning is the process of analyzing a real-world object or environment to collect data on its shape and possibly its appearance. The collected data can then be used to construct digital 3D models

  • First, i uploaded both applications from the App Store

Qlone

  • Scanning process is very easy, First, choose an object and place it on the middle of the mat,you can get the mat from the app or the website and you can print it in different scales to fit the object. move slowly around the object or rotate the mat till the entire blue AR dome is complete. avoid shinny objects.

Comments

3D printing

  • it doesn’t need a lot of space to stock inventory, unlike traditional manufacturing processes. as there is no need to print in bulk unless required.
  • 3D printing is simpler to use than CNC machining.
  • 3D printing can creat parts with high geometric complexity comparing to CNC.

3D Scaning

  • the final results are not very neat and clean which can be difficult to 3D print the scanned object.
