2. Computer Aided design¶
This week we got introduced to the principles of design and the tools we can use to create 2D and 3d designs.
In this week, we tried multiple tools for designing so we can get a small knowledge about them and pick the best one that suits us the most.
3D softwares¶
OpenSCAD¶
this was the first software I tried and it’s for 3D designs. The great about this tool is that we use codes to create 3D designs! Which are the thing I found very interesting and I directly tried using and learning about them.
My first 3d design ever was using this tool and I created a simple car.
Firstly, I learned some basics from the official website of the software
After that, I tried multiple random things and then I said let me do something useful, the first thing comes to my mind was a car so I started writing the code and I made it.

I really enjoyed using the tool and I highly recommend it for people who love coding!
fusion360¶
I decided to use fusion 360 for designing a stand for my phone.
I started the design by creating a sketch for the main body of the stand which I created multiple lines and connected them in a way to represent my stand.
After finishing the 2D sketch, I extrude it to be as a 3D design
Then I created a hall from the back to connect a charging cable if needed. I did that by creating a slot and extruding it.
After creating the first hall on the back, I created another hall on the front so I can easily charge the phone if it is in a vertical position.
Finally, I filled the edges of the stand.

This software is so amazing and we can create a lot of good designs using it but after learning how to use it because it is so complex which is the only disadvantage I can see about this software.
2D softwares¶
cuttle¶
This software is a 2D design software which is a vector editor with features for cut design like live modifiers, parameters, reusable components, and scripting.
I started using it direct before watching any tutorial because it so
I started using it directly before watching any tutorial because it is so simple. I created a design that does not mean anything at all but it is still a design and has a nice look.
What I did is simply drag fours polygon and placed them in this order
After that, I rotationally repeated them by clicking on modify on the top bar and then the third option.
In the beginning, I thought it is not good software because it was very simple, but after I used it I changed my opinion. Although it appears as software that is only used by beginners and young people, it has lots of features that no other design can do.

VECTR¶
The software is available online which makes it easy to access. Also, it is so simple and has the drag and drop style which makes it software to create a fast design without a lot of details in it. Down below is a simple design I did.
