6. Large format CNC (computer controlled Machining)

This week I worked on CNC machines

CNC

CNC is the automated control of machining tools (such as drills, lathes, mills, grinders, routers and 3D printers) by means of a computer. A CNC machine processes a piece of material (metal, plastic, wood, ceramic, or composite) to meet specifications by following coded programmed instructions and without a manual operator directly controlling the machining operation.

Vcarve

We used Vcarve software for CNC machine Download the software Here

Individual Assignment

Idea

Animal shaped wooden shelves

I used fusion 360 to design a shelve . I will design a cat by using many shapes and sketch.

So I added a two circles for head and body with two triangle for ears . I added two circles foe eyes then added a triangle and sketched some lines to complete cat’s face Here I made two rectangular for shelve with added some joints I added rectangular on the body for fit the joints in it

Cutting

Here is what it would look like my design in the cnc machine and how the machine cutting it.

The material we will use is plywood, and by using Vcarve Noting the plywood dimensions is 1220mm x 2440mm x 12mm

Since this machine cannot cut 90 degree angle in the corners so a “Dog-Bone Fillet” is accessible in the Vcrave application. then clicking on the Dog-Bone.

These are the values needed to cut with the plywood material which is defined the cutting depth 13mm, the thickness of the blade 3mm and the speed of the moving blade head 30 inch/min, The feed rate 110, and the rotational speed of the blade 14000 rpm.

This is the preview of the toolpath

Problems

It was my first time to make something quite big, my design was actually small so I asked for help to adjust the size by scale. I faced a problem using the hammer to put the joints together, but my colleague helped me with it.
