8. Moulding and casting

This week I worked on moulding and casting.

The difference between molding and casting

The main difference between molding and casting is the use of the material in the process. Casting will typically involve metal, while molding focuses on plastics. In both cases, the melted material goes into a die or mold to create the final form.

Design

I used fusion 360 for my design

First I added two circles for head and ears then I used mirror for ears, and I cut the lines.

Then I added circles for eyes and nose.

I sketched the mouth.

I used press pull.

The result

The requirements for the design size are as follows:

Smallest gap: 1.6mm (That’s the smallest milling bit) Design height max: 8mm Design width and length max: 60mm

Remember to keep your design 2.5D (no undercuts) but don’t keep it flat (you shouldn’t be able to cut it with the laser cutter)

Milling & Molding

Roland monoFAB SRM-20 CNC milling machine:

monoFAB SRM-20 is a desktop-sized CNC milling machine produced by the well-known Roland,The SRM-20 is well renowned for its user-friendliness and ease of use. It is capable of high-precision milling of a variety of materials, from modeling wax to PC board and plastics.

I used double sided tape to stick the wax

To create the toolpath I entered the size of the model within the space I measured.

I set the type of milling to better surface finsh so that I dont lose any details from my model. Then I chose the flat plane option and I set cut top only because my model is one sided.

I created toolpath that would do a rough cut 3/32 millbit

When creating the toolpath I used the arrow keys to move the machine and XY to set the origin point.

I press Start cutting to start the milling process.

Casting

I will use the mold I made to create a cast. I will do this by pouring silacone in it and wait for it dry.

I poured water in the mold then measured it to determine how much silacone I would need to make.

I mixed it together then poured it into the mold.

GR Resin (multi use)

I used Gr resin for create the cast, I followed the instructions from our Group assignment

10 grams of resin

add 6 grams of Hardener to 10 grams of resin

I filled the grisen in the cast with some color and left it for 24 hours.

The result

Problems

The Silicon mold mixing ratio was a bit off so it’s structure was not perfect (not completely solid) so the surface was stained with fingerprints which appeared in the final cast. To avoid that from happening follow the mixing ratio precisely and give the mixture enough time to dry without touching it.
