2. Computer Aided design

This week I worked on creating 2D Vector drawings and 3D models.

Computer Aided design

CAD (Computer-aided design) refers to the use of computer software that supports the design process. The software helps us create, modify, analyze, and enhance designs. In other words, CAD is software that helps us design things. It is a method of digitally creating 2D drawings and 3D models of real-world products before they’re ever manufactured.

2D Vector Drawings

For 2D vector drawings, I used Vectr and Inkscape software.

Vectr

Vectr is a free graphics software used to create vector graphics easily and intuitively. It’s a simple yet powerful web and desktop cross-platform tool to bring your designs into reality.

Remarks

I found Vectr to be a very simple and easy-to-use graphic editor. Its user interface is pretty simple. However, it has limited functionalities as compared to other software, but it is very good for beginners.

Inkscape

Inkscape is a free and open source vector graphics editor for GNU/Linux, Windows and Mac. It is used for both artistic and technical illustrations such as cartoons, clip art, logos, typography, diagramming and flowcharting. It uses vector graphics to allow for sharp printouts and renderings at unlimited resolution and is not bound to a fixed number of pixels like raster graphics. Inkscape uses the standardized SVG file format as its main format, which is supported by many other applications including web browsers.

Remarks

Inkscape offers many features and tools, but its user experience isn’t that good. Also, the user interface isn’t attractive. I found it to be a bit confusing while trying to figure out how to do things.

3D Models

I created 3D Models using Autodesk Tinkercad and Fusion360 software by Autodesk.

Autodesk

Autodesk is a global leader in design and make technology. It makes CAD design software for land surveyors, civil engineers, project managers, and construction professionals. With expertise across architecture, engineering, construction, design, manufacturing, and entertainment.

Tinkercad

Tinkercad is a free web app runs by AutoDesk for 3D design, electronics, and coding. Tinkercad is probably one of the simplest and most intuitive 3D modeling tools available for beginners.

Remarks

Tinkercad is one of the simpliest and easy to use 3D modeling tool. Tinkercad is best for those who just getting into 3D modelling. I enjoyed using it.

Fusion 360

Fusion360 is a Computer-Aided Design (CAD) Software by Autodesk. Fusion 360 is a platform for 3D CAD, modeling, manufacturing, industrial design and engineering. With Fusion 360 we can also collaborate, manage data, create toolpaths, and run simulations to validate our designs.

Remarks

Fusion360 has user-friendly interface. It provides us with many advanced features and powerful tools. However, If you are a beginner, you need to go through some tutorials.
