5. 3D printing and scanning

This week I learned how to host my idea and turn it into real just in couble of hours! by using 3D printing technology. I learned how to scan any object and turn it into digital world!

FDM : You see how a printer creates an image one line at a time? FDM printers are exactly the same, expect they work in three dimensions instead of just two. FDM (Fused deposition modeling) works by extruding thermoplastic filaments through a heated nozzle (215-290C), melting the material and applying the plastic layer by layer in the platform, and during the process of extrusion the change in temperature causes the plastic to shrink as it is being melted out.

SLA : It is used to create objects by resin, layer by layer using UV laser beam.

Important information - Infill: is the amount of plastic inside the object to be printed, the amount of infill is determined according to the desired durability, and the infill percentage is selected by 3D printing software

  • layer height thickness : The height of printing layers affects the accuracy of the printed design, and the layer height is selected by 3D printing software. The relation between layer height and accuracy percentage is inverse. When layer height is higher, the accuracy percentage lowers and thus time decreases. While layer height is lower, the accuracy percentage increases and thus time increases.

  • Support: is the added part that supports the overhanging structure which needs to be removed after printing.

3D Printing

What is 3D Printing?

is a method of creating a three dimensional object layer-by-layer using a computer created design.

To design my own 3D printing model I used Fusion 360. My idea basically is a coffee capsules holder.I chose this model because I love coffee!, and I know there are alot of holders we actually always see them at home but why not make it a holder that I can take it anywhere! Well 3D printing can print anything!

Individual Assignment

First process ‘Testing the 3D printer’

“The material used by a 3d pinter depend largely on what is the intended use of the design - Different speeds and melting points can really elongate your printing time but provide you with the most structurally stable design - Parafilms comes in all shapes, sizes and prices! - The most commonly used material for printing is PLA - When exporting a designing to be 3D printed make sure its in gcode format” notes of my collague Kawther Ghaleb

I started the model with 2D shapes as shown

Now to make it hollow I had to xtrude the circle it will look like a cylinder

I cut the half of cylinder to have this final design !

View design through Ultimaker Cura software

Adjusted the settings

let support on

My design printing time duration

Final look !

Design file as f3d

Design file as fxb

Why my design cannot be made subtractively?

It is because my design had to be done by 3d printing, I cannot make it all laser cut in a one moment as I need to cut all box parts but by 3D printing it is printed in a one set

Scanning

What is Qlone?

Qlone is a 3D scanning mobile app to create 3D models from real objects and export the result to popular platforms. The scanner app features near-real-time 3D scanning and generates results locally.

After downloading the app I started to scan “Batman” object!

How does it work?

Basically I chose to scan with “Qlone mat”

when I started to scan it appears an AR dome that guided me through scanning process.

I had to scan the object from different angles and automatically AR dome start to disappear. Through my scanning process, there is no waiting time, all processing is done in real time on my phone in seconds.

Final Look !

Problems encountred There are possible reasons for not getting the desired look.

1- The position of my object was not fixed it was a bit swinging.

2- Angle is not fixed, that is why the app couldn’t recognize the object from right angle.

## Problems encountred well the holder is not good perfectly because I couldn’t pull the capsules smoothley the measurements need adjustments
