6. Large format CNC (computer controlled Machining)

This week I worked on Large format CNC.

CNC stands for Computerized Numerical Control. It is a computerized manufacturing process in which pre-programmed software and code controls the movement of production equipment.

I choosed to design a chair..

Group Assignment

Click here to see the group assignment documented by Yusuf Yaqoob Group assignment covers an important information including: (setting up the machine, using fixings, testing joints, adjusting feeds and speeds, depth of cut etc.)

Design Idea

I have chosen to make a hammock chair

I found a similar chair design, to facilitate designing progress

Design

I have designed the chair using Fusion360

I have depended on curves to design the chair and to feel free in controlling the size.

I have designed the joints, added my name on the chair’s sides using the text option, and designed a rectangle to form the seat.

Toolpath

Using Vcarve Noting the plywood dimensions is 1220mm x 2440mm x 12mm

Because the CNC machine cannot cut 90-degree corners, creating areas for the machine to travel in around corners is a smart solution. A Dog-Bone Fillet is a name for this procedure. The Dog-Bone Fillet may be found in Vcarve by selecting the Fillet tool and then the Dog-Bone Fillet.

Fillet/ Tool radius to 3.2mm

I have chosen to cut externally

Cutting

After the previous progress, I have got the chair’s parts.

Assembly

Final

Problems

The chair was initially big so I redesigned parts of it. The chair after assembly was lacking to hold a person so I added support from wood.
