Final Project

For our Final project we have decided to make a kinetic flower that would ” flourish” when activated. It would read from two sensors, one is temprature, and it has an LED strip that would change colors based on the temprature which indicates if the temprature is too hot, too cold, or just right. For the second Sensor is the motion sensor, as it would take the input from it and it would activate it.

Research

I was responsible of creating the actual flower and connect it to the mechanism of how it would flourish. For me I wanted to make the flower as real as possible and to have that feeling when you look at a random flower in nature, all of the kinetic flower look synthetic and I didn’t want to have that design, so I decided to create the petals with a fabric, laser cut it, stick them into a washer that is also laser cutted using 3mm acrlylic.

Making the design

To create a design that would be pushed through a tube of some sort I had to think of a way that would connect the petals with each other and the flower would open once it leaves the tube, so I have decided to creat a connecter between a pair of petals as we would put one on each end of the washer.

Once thee design is finished I went to the laser cutter and started to cut as many petals as I can with random sizes.

After looking at the design I have decided to create another but smaller washer to hold the smaller petals and would press on the bigger petals making it look more realistic.

Issue

One major issue that we face is my desing for the washer was too thin as it would break if we would put petals and try to connect it to the mechanism.

Solution

I decided to use a bolt and some nuts and washers to squeeze the petals all together and then connect that bolt to a small metal rod that would connect to the servo motor.

I used the metal rod as a connector as I wrapped it around the bolt that holds the flower.
